I want to shoot a music video with a strong emotional narrative, aimed at the indie/young generation music scene that follow Kodaline, and the artistic style used in my video i believe will resonate with the demographic i have chosen (18-30).
This demographic are more prone to going to live music events and festivals and so will be more likely to search music videos on social networking and video upload sites, which may bring them to watch my video. The adult age also lends itself to the visible content within the video. My video touches upon quite sensitive subjects such as abuse, lonliness and possibly substance abuse which would be unsuitable for those under 18.
I have researched some statistics on Kodaline and their fan base and have found that their growth of fan numbers rises in the thousands by week and that the majority of their fanbase by population are based in the United Kingdom.
This company is also known for their social marketing campaigns, which tells me that they work closely alongside Twitter, Facebook etc to provide accurate and factual information about a chosen brand.
Unfortunately, i was unable to source any age range demographics from this website, which would have allowed me to secure my demographic more clearly to fit in with Kodaline's current audience.
Instead, i decided to think about how ages would affect bands and their audiences.
So i decided to look at tickets. I did try to do a simply Google search for age statistics, but having a quick scan over the search results i didn't find anything that would support my chosen demographic.
So I decided to look at ticket sales as i know that some gigs and concerts have an age limitation.
I looked on TicketMaster and found the event information for a gig that Kodaline would be performing at in Birmingham.
This sustains my reason for chosen the 18-30range as my chosen demographics.
Although 14year olds are allowed at the event they still need adult supervision and therefore i would prefer to have my demographics' ages to start at 18 due to the song/video content and inkeeping with audience protection.
The narrative however will contain strong emotional scenes, acknowledging physical and mental abuse within a home, between a father and daughter.
It should raise awareness of this abuse subconsciously through the narrative.
Highlighting a serious issue through the medium of film and music allows the audiences to see the issue at hand yet in a subtle way; so they will notice the abuse yet it won't be as hard-hitting and obvious as a campaign video or similar. Tackling the issue in this way by creating a music video will raise awareness for this demographic who may not receive the campaign style attempts of awareness through television programmes, and instead by placing the issue at hand within a music video, it softens the effect.
Of Monsters & Men - Dirty Paws
Narrative: The plot for the video would be centred around a young girl, early twenties, who has a volatile relationship within her household with her father. Her mother has since passed and the girl receives abuse from her father; mentally and physically.
The video will highlight her struggles as she tries to succeed through college while maintaining a neutral ground at home.
Her and her father reach breaking point when he abuses her and she fights back. She then retreats back to her room where she thinks about ending it all the be with her mum.
She packs some things away and walks out of the door, walking down the streets.
#1 - She then boards a train and begins her new life somewhere new; a fresh start, to reinvent herself as a new person without rule from her father.
We then see her walking through a happier place; a lot brighter when filmed as opposed to the grim, depressive nature of the scenes at her home.
Lots of sequences of nature, brightness, happier expressions.
I have two endings for the film; one where the girl becomes happier in her new place, quite an open ending but wraps up that she is in a new location restarting her life.
The second ending can turn out much worse for the girl; exposing her new life as an addict living rough, which turns out to be worse and no better from what she imagiend when she planned to run away from her home with her father.
If i do not receive permission to use the Of Monsters & Men track, i would then try to produce a video for local metal band When Giants Collide.
I know the vocalist of the band so the permission for retrieving the track to be used would be a lot easier for the permission from Of Monsters & Men.
The video for When Giants Collide would be less narrative driven and more symbolic of the themes of abandonment and struggles through life; which are the same themes for Of Monsters & Men, but visually it would be sequences rather than a short film piece.
It could possibly be shot in a warehouse with lights and colour being the main visual stimulants.

I have managed to acquire Kodaline's permission top use their track 'All I Want'' for my narrative music video.
I was at first eager to contact Of Monsters & Men to ask for their permission to use their track 'Dirty Paws', however they didn't reply back to my email so i contacted Kodaline and as they agreed, i am now developing the new idea for my narrative music video.
I did have a solid constructed production design for the music video for 'Dirty Paws' as the lyrics complimented the visuals perfectly.
However, the lyrics and melody for 'All I Want' are very melancholic and are much more effective at portraying the emotion of longing, love and tumultuous love through sound; juxta posing the imagery with the powerful text.
Kodaline - All I Want Lyrics
Of Monsters & Men - Dirty Paws Lyrics
Although Kodaline already have a narrative music video for 'All I Want', and some of our themes are very similar, my video will be more powerful in terms of approaching the subject matter in an entirely different way.
For example; in Kodaline's video, the protagonist tries to overcome difficulties at work, similarly in my piece the protagonist will try to overcome her difficulties at home, tackling the issue of abusive relationships and domestic abuse.
In Kodaline's video, the antagonist tries to make the protagonist's life (at work) a hard time; poking fun at their appearance, but again in mine it has physical abuse and emotional turmoil for our protagonist.

I haven't decided yet which way to go with my protagonist.
The narrative structure allows her to walk away from this life of abuse and become a better person, making a new start and a new life.
However, i may make it so that she ends up in a far worse state that when she started.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll use this style to mimic their own work and to follow their style so that my video will fit in stylistically with theirs.
Their track 'All I Want' has an amazing epiphany style conclusion to the song; which will work amazingly well against slow visuals, Scorsese style flashes and jump cuts.
I want the tone and lighting to really reflect the thoughts and emotions of our characters; consisiting of the girl (protagonist) and her abusive father or boyfriend (yet to be decided; antagonist).
I think alot of natural light and dusky tones will mimic her fight for freedom and hope.

Friday 10th May
I contacted Kodaline for their permission to use their track 'All I Want' for my narrative music video.
I had to contact them over Facebook as i couldn't find a PR contact address.
I'm very pleased that they have responded and given their permission as it now means i have a strong drive to get this video filmed and edited. Without their permission, i would have felt that i could not use their music, as i wanted to do this correctly and obtain permission from my chosen artist.
Although they are rising in fame, they responded and I can't wait to start filming now.
Working on my own, i will be directing, filming, editing and promoting my music video.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday 10th May - 15:14pm
I have just spoken to my chosen actors; Viviana Poludniak and Stephen Maloney about their schedule for when they are free to shoot my video.
I have guessed that the shoot should take no longer than a day to film.
It will be at my home as i need a homely setting and the only props will be newspapers piled up around the sofa and old bottles/cans on the coffee table.
I'm very excited to start shooting now. My actors are available, my artist has given me permission, now all i need to do is focus on the shoot and the edit and organise my time inbetween to research the film festival history.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday 20th May - 20:00pm
I have schedule to film tomorrow (Tuesday 21st May) with my actors for my music video, but may need to schedule another day of shooting with Viviana in as she has other commitments; allowing me to only have 5hours of filming time tomorrow. I know that i won't complete the video tomorrow, as it will be too complex logistically to feasibly film in about 5 locations.
I have listened over my chosen track multiple times and have made notes according to the key changes and lyrical lines as i listen through, and can almost picture the final video in my mind.
I now have to arrange which scenes i will shoot tomorrow, but if i complete the scenes where Viviana is with Stephen and alone in her room, then i should only need another full day (9-6) to film pick-ups and my train scene.
Hopefully the shoot should run smoothly tomorrow. I havent written a script as such as i want the actors to have free range and be quite loose on diection; allowing them and experimenting to see how they may react in a 'violent scene', with physical theatre involved.
FOR MY MUSIC VIDEO I WILL BE USING MY OWN DSLR CANON 650D. I AM ALSO USING MY OWN MICROPHONE THAT WILL ATTATCH TO MY CAMERA SHOULD I CHOOSE TO USE IT; HOWEVER, I MAY USE THE MICROPHONE BUILT IN ON MY CAMERA AS THE ONLY MAJOR AUDIO I WILL BE USING IS THE TRACK - WITH PERMISSION FROM KODALINE.
AS I AM FILMING IN MY OWN HOME, I DO NOT NEED TO OBTAIN ANY PERMISSION TO FILM.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I filmed the start of my music video last Tuesday with Viviana and Stephen. I think the filming when really when for a first attempt and with me being on my own.
I used the handheld rig for the majority of the shots, otherwise i just freestyled it but i didnt use a tripod at all.
I decided to record the sound directly from my camera, capturing the audio simultaneously as my footage. As the track by Kodaline will be the core audio featured in my music video, i did want to have the turbulent relationship between Viviana & Stephen shown through dialogue as well as physical contact , so i layered their exchanges over the track so you can hear their conversation but it doesnt detract from the focus of the lyrics and the sound.
I didn't storyboard as such but i listened to the song and made notes of what i could see the video visually turning out like as the lyrics went on; trying to compliment the audio with the visuals on screen.
I wanted the actors to improvise and really get into the mindset of their characters, so we played around with the actions and i just freestyled with the rig around them.
Alot of the stylistic touches will come into fruition when i edit the video, using fades and editing techniques to really give the video some momentum.
The only issue i had when filming was the technical difficulties with the camera.
I had placed a brand new SD card into the camera; SanDisk 32GB 10speed exactly the same as my other one.
I trust this brand and was surprised when i got issues.
The card allowed me to film for around 30minutes until a bar then appeared on the screen and filming stopped after 6seconds. I tried it again with basic settings in case that was the issue but it wasnt.
I swapped the cards and it began working perfectly after that; but it did hinder filming time as i had no idea how i could make it work again, and thankfully i had another card ready and at hand.
That can be one of the difficulties working on your own; as im not extremely technical anyway i had no other crew at hand to resolve the issue.
As one of my actors had other commitments to attend to, we could only shoot until 3:00pm, but we did the home based setting scenes within 3.5 hours, even with the technical issue.
I need to get Viviana's other scenes another day, which is scheduled for Wednesday morning around 9:30am - which is the next available time Viviana can film.
Production Schedule
Tuesday 21st May 2013 11:00am-13:30pm
- filming in my home. Viviana walks in and her father (Stephen) starts and argument, asking where she has been.
Viviana runs upstairs. Sits, wondering how to escape.
She summons the courage and packs a bag.
Walks out of the house.
Stephen tries to stop her.
Friday 31st May 2013 11:00am-14:00pm
- Train ride, decides to go far away
Viviana is now on the streets.
She is wandering around trying to find shelter.
She realizes that she has no where to go, and that maybe she shouldn't have left.
She ends up no better than when she was at home; still in an unhappy place.
It didn't take as long to film as i thought it would as i had a clear image of the shots I wanted in my head, and as I live in Bradford i knew little places and locations that i could use and get to efficiently and quickly.
I knew that i wanted to film in an underpass/subway, so we walked to the underground near the National Media Museum and filmed under there.
We also filmed the tree scene/spinning effect there, as it opens up at the roundabout above us.
We just walked around Bradford and found little spots that i thought would work; so the video itself is a journey of our walk during production.
I didn't film anyone else other than my actors in my music video, so i didn't need to obtain other permissions for shooting.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I started editing my music video today (Friday 24th). Im so pleased with what i have achieved already in terms of editing and am very excited to start filming and editing the second half of my video.
I have edited around 3minutes of footage already and the cuts fit with the track perfectly. I'm just trying to get the audio levels right for the footage; I'm leaving some of the audio in as it creates another dimension for the scenario so you can understand the characters' volatile relationship.
All i need to do now is control the audio and sort the colour balances out and brighten some shots.
I'm not sure whether to change the footage to black and grey to give a more emotional theme from colour, but the desaturation adds to the emotion and allows your to focus on their relationship, as opposed to being distracted by other colours in the background.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have currently completed an edit of my music video, and i am now correcting the colours and changing the video to black and white.
I did some more filming with Viviana; including the train shots and the outdoor scenes.
Im very happy with how quickly we filmed, only taking around 3 hours to capture loads of footage, some of which i have even cut from the final cut as it wasn't in time which the music and was unecessary for the narrative and it holds itself quite well and you can understand the journey Viviana's character is taking.
Even though there is a lot of footage of Viviana on her own, i feel as though this carries to narrative so well and allows you to listen to the lyrics and really feel her emotions.
I have had some feedback from peers that have commented how it was 'hitting' and 'dark', which i really take as a compliment as i am very proud of that music video, solely created by myself.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have now completely finished my music video. Ive desaturated the colours and it works really well with the high contrast juxtposing with the lyrics of the track.
There is one small clip that hasnt got the same colour settings, and i cannot change it in post; it must have been a mistaken on my part of changing the camera settings when i was filming, which i can learn from and be more technical as opposed so solely visual.
But overall im thoroughly happy with the production; from start to finish.
I even made a little title at the end, using Photoshop to alter an actual image from Kodaline, and placing in layers of text and altering the fonts and effects.
Here is the final edit of my narrative music video for Kodaline - All I Want :
I will enter my music video into the UK Film Festival 13th - 16th November.
They have a category for Best Music Video which i will enter my work into.
Although i doubt it will win, not against the calibre of previous entries, im very proud of the work i have produced and i know when i work more and gain more experience, my work will be alot more refined.
It would be nice for my work to be even shown alongside professional music videos, so that at least professionals, those in the industry and the general public can view my work without even knowing me; showcasing to a wide audience, which in turn may develop interest for further work.
UK Film Festival
Ive chosen to enter my music video into this competition as the festival has a very contemporary laid back feel, and that's what i want for my video.
I dont want to enter my video into a pressured environment that is not what i want my audience to feel.
Instead i wanted to find a very comfortable, enjoyable, relaxed atmosphere to showcase my work in and i think i have found it with this festival.
I have looked at previous winner, a video directed by Frank Jerky, and feel that the same audience who viewed and follow Ima Robot (the artist) would appreciate and like my video for Kodaline's - All I Want.
Although Jerky's work is quite darker than mine, they share similar aspects of life emotions within their videos; such as loss, love and that sinking feeling.
Ima Robot are classed as indie, alternative & dance rock.
They do have an indie feel to them, and thats the following that Kodaline are gaining.

Evaluation
In terms of the finished product, i am quite happy with the technical quality of the video.
Although there are slight differences in colour and contrast in some shots, i have learnt to note the camera settings and be more conscious of my technical requirements of which i will need to shoot.
I do like some of the shots, such as the train ride and the eyes at the end. I used the handheld rig for the majority of the film, apart from the train and overpass scenes, but i didn't consciously think of the shots, i just played the narrative in my head of how i saw the film, continuously listening to the track and seeing the film play on repeat in my mind, so it was rather natural to film how i did.
I do believe my video has a strong narrative with a solid message and theme that can be reinterpreted by the audience, which i think is a strong sign that it can be received well by others and more discussion can be had around the principal of the story.
The track compliments the visuals very well, and does hold a strong emotional pull when one views it.
I believe i have met the deadlines well due to the passion that has been put into the making of the video; myself being the sole maker, editor and producer of the piece.
Had i maybe worked in a group i feel as though there could have been timeframe conflicts due to availability, and since i did this piece on my own i could negotiate and deligate with my actors accordingly, only using 2actors meant that only 3 timeframes were to be discussed.
I have had great feedback from my peers, tutors and friends, which has spurred me on to be more interested in the production of music videos.
I have learnt a lot from working on this, being able to manage my time to film and edit and also technical issues/and working to make the best of my work through editing techniques, using Scorsese style jump cuts to give a more polished look to my work.
I have also studied Shane Meadows' Somers Town' which really resonates with me through narrative and his colour work as well as edit and action sequences. This style also fits in well with my chosen demographic, as due to it's sensitive, abusive content may affect those who watch it, and going by the guidelines i have seen through films, the demographic 18-30 is very suitable. It also gives the impression that this is a mature video with content that should not be taken lightly or amusingly, yet highlights these issues through the mediums of music and film, softening the message slightly to engage the audience.
Overall i am very pleased with my narrtive music video, and am proud to have produced piece of work that has had great feedback solely on my own.
